Dyslexia Homeschooling in Damansara, Petaling Jaya: BrainWorks Homeschool Campus

Dyslexia changes how a child reads, not how well they think. Our small-group Cambridge programme rebuilds the reading pathways step by step, while thinking and subject learning stay at full age level.

What it can look like

Dyslexia is a lifelong, brain-based difference that mainly affects accurate and fluent reading and spelling. It is not low intelligence, laziness or poor eyesight.

Younger children

  • Trouble learning letter sounds
  • Difficulty rhyming
  • Slow to recall letter names
  • Avoids reading aloud

Primary age

  • Guesses words from pictures
  • Spells the same word differently
  • Slow, tiring reading
  • Strong talking, weak writing

Secondary age

  • Avoids reading and writing tasks
  • Knows more than their writing shows
  • Falls behind on long texts
  • Loss of confidence

Many learners with dyslexia show strong big-picture thinking, creativity, problem solving, spoken language and spatial reasoning. We build on these strengths.

The learning route

Primary years

Early years · Stages 1–2

Phonemic awareness, letter sounds with sand, clay and movement, blending with decodable books, first typing.

Middle years · Stages 3–4

Syllable types and spelling patterns in order, fluency practice, oral then written comprehension.

Upper years · Stages 5–6

Morphology (roots, prefixes, suffixes), writing frames, reading to learn in Maths and Science.

Secondary years

Lower Secondary · 11–14

Catch-up decoding with age-appropriate texts, spelling by morphology, writing frames, and tools as the normal way of working.

IGCSE · 14–16

Command-word training, past-paper routines, time planning, typing and speech-to-text fluency, exam skills from 12 months out.

For late-identified learners

A baseline screen shows where the reading circuit needs rebuilding, and progress is measured against the learner's own starting point.

A day in the programme

8:30 to 3:00 with movement first: sports and movement, breakfast, four learning blocks, lunch, then revision and assessment. Groups of one to four learners.

  • Structured literacy: review, new concept, multisensory practice, decodable reading and dictation.
  • Mathematics: hands-on, spoken-first and step-by-step.
  • Science or other subject: experiments, diagrams and oral explanation.
  • Cognitive and skill set: attention and memory training, typing, tools and study skills, plus character reflection.

The Cambridge pathway

Cambridge Primary (ages 5 to 11), Cambridge Lower Secondary (11 to 14) and Cambridge IGCSE (14 to 16), taught at the right pace for your child.

How we track progress

  • Baseline screen: phonological awareness, letter-sound knowledge, word and non-word reading, spelling, fluency, listening comprehension, working memory.
  • Weekly mastery checklist.
  • Re-test every 10–12 weeks.
  • Termly parent report with simple graphs and next goals.

A dyslexia-friendly learning space: spoken instructions alongside written ones, off-white paper, clear fonts, no cold reading aloud and no public timed tests.

Frequently asked questions

Do you diagnose dyslexia?

No. BrainWorks screens and supports learning. A formal diagnosis comes from a qualified professional, and we can guide you to the right referral, for example through the Dyslexia Association of Malaysia.

Will my child follow the Cambridge pathway?

Yes. Reading and spelling are rebuilt at your child's current decoding level, while thinking, vocabulary and subject content follow Cambridge Primary, Lower Secondary and IGCSE at age level.

How big are the groups?

One to four learners, so every child is seen. Each child has an Individual Learning Profile with clear 90-day goals.

How much do I need to do at home?

About ten minutes a day of a simple routine. We are not asking you to tutor.

What does it cost?

Fees depend on your child's needs and programme. Please contact us for details.
