What is homeschooling?

Homeschooling means your child learns outside a conventional school, on a plan made for them. There are three common ways: a parent teaching at home, families teaching together, or a homeschool campus, where trained coaches teach small groups on a set timetable. BrainWorks is a homeschool campus.

Homeschool campus or international school?

  • Class size: about 21 students on average in KL international schools; 4 to 6 per group at BrainWorks.
  • Pace: moves on when your child has mastered the topic.
  • An individual learning plan for each child.
  • Brain training, character and daily sport built into every day.
  • Replacement, extended and weekend classes when your child needs them.
  • Weekly report, monthly progress call and a WhatsApp group for parents.

29 reasons parents choose homeschooling

  1. Your child isn't reaching the standard you expect

Many children move up a year every year with gaps nobody goes back to fix. A homeschool campus finds those gaps and closes them before moving on.

  2. Your child needs more of the teacher's attention

International school classes in KL average about 21 students, so each child gets a few minutes of teacher time per lesson. In a group of 4 to 6, your child is seen, heard and corrected every lesson.

  3. You want your child to truly understand before moving on

In a big class, the lesson moves on once most students understand, and the rest must catch up alone. With mastery-based learning, the coach keeps teaching a topic until your child has mastered it.

  4. You want a plan built for your child, not for a class

A school plans one syllabus for a whole year group. A homeschool campus builds an individual learning plan around your child's strengths, gaps and goals, and updates it as they grow.

  5. Your child has learning difficulties

Mild special needs tendencies, attention problems and general learning difficulties are easy to miss in a class of 20 or more. A small group gives these children the patience, structure and pace they need to progress.

  6. You want to know what your fees are really buying

International school tuition in KL runs from about RM 20,000 to RM 143,400 a year, before joining fees of RM 5,000 to RM 59,000. Compare that with what a homeschool campus gives: groups of 4 to 6, a coach who knows your child, and a plan built around them.

  7. You're planning to study overseas

Entrance tests abroad often expect more than your child's current year group covers. A homeschool plan can move faster and target exactly what those tests require.

  8. Your child still earns Cambridge qualifications

Our coaches teach the Cambridge curriculum and prepare students for the same Cambridge IGCSE exams as international school students. The certificate is the same one universities in Malaysia and abroad already accept.

  9. You don't have to become the teacher

Many parents think homeschooling means teaching their child at home themselves. At a homeschool campus, trained coaches do the teaching on a structured timetable, so working parents can keep working.

  10. You want teachers who understand your child, not just a class

In a large school, a teacher is trained to know the subject and manage the class. With 4 to 6 students, BrainWorks coaches learn each child's needs and teach to them.

  11. You want someone to solve problems with you

A school serving thousands of students rarely has time to find the root of one child's difficulty. A homeschool campus sits down with you to find solutions, whether the issue is character, cognition, lifestyle or learning.

  12. You want to be closer to your child's learning

In a large school, contact often means emails and one parent-teacher meeting a term. At a homeschool campus, you know the coaches personally and hear about progress every week.

  13. You want more than academics

The world is changing fast, and grades alone no longer prepare a child for it. At BrainWorks, every student learns across four modules: cognitive development, character development, skill set and Cambridge academics.

  14. You want to build a stronger, sharper brain

Attention, memory and reasoning can be trained, like a muscle. BrainWorks follows a 10-stage cognitive framework, from Attention and Focus through to Think, Decide, Act and Evolve.

  15. You're an expat family and want more for your fees

When you return home, your child should fit straight back in, at or above the level of classmates there. Homeschooling lets you match, or get ahead of, the standard in your home country.

  16. Real social skills, in a well-run setting

Socialisation is the most common worry about homeschooling. A 2013 review of three decades of research concluded homeschooled children do gain the social skills they need, and on our campus they work in groups, mix across ages and talk with adults daily.

  17. A calmer, safer environment

A small community is closely supervised, so bullying, status pressure and peer conflict have little room to grow unnoticed. Children can focus on learning instead of fitting in.

  18. Less stress, more confidence

Children who fall behind often start to see themselves as weak. In a small group they can ask questions without embarrassment, and each small success rebuilds their belief in themselves.

  19. You need flexible timing

Missed classes can be replaced, extended sessions and tuition run until 7pm, and weekend classes can be added. The timetable bends to what your child needs, not the other way round.

  20. You can start any time of the year

There is no intake season and no waiting list. This suits families relocating to KL mid-year, and children who need to leave their current school now rather than next term.

  21. Your child can move ahead where they're strong

A child can work at Year 9 level in maths while building up Year 7 English. Fast learners are no longer held back by the pace of the slowest topic in the class.

  22. Learning starts from an assessment, not an age

A school places your child by birthday. A homeschool campus first finds out how your child learns, and plans from there; at BrainWorks, this starts with a screening or the Brainmap™ cognitive assessment.

  23. Focused preparation for Cambridge exams

Exam years need more than finishing the syllabus. Small groups allow targeted past-paper practice, exam technique and extra time on each student's weakest topics.

  24. Stronger English for children who speak another language at home

In a class of 20, a child still learning English may rarely get a turn to speak. In a group of 4 to 6, they speak, read and write English every lesson, with a coach correcting them.

  25. More learning in fewer hours

A large school day loses time to assemblies, moving between rooms and managing big groups. In a small group, almost every minute of our four learning hours is teaching time.

  26. Your child learns to learn on their own

University and work reward people who can plan, focus and study without being chased. Homeschool students practise managing their own learning every day, with a coach close by to guide them.

  27. Teachers who know your child's history

Most international schools start teachers on two-year contracts, and many move on after a few years. On a small campus, the same team can follow your child's progress over the years.

  28. Time for sport, music and passions

The day ends at 3pm, which leaves room for training, music exams, competitions and serious hobbies. Young athletes and performers no longer have to choose between their talent and their studies.

  29. A healthier daily rhythm

Teenagers' body clocks run later, and paediatricians recommend 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep a night for them. Our day starts with sport at 8:30am, so children arrive awake and ready to think.

Questions parents ask us

What is a homeschool campus?

A homeschool campus teaches homeschooled children in small groups, with trained coaches and a set timetable. Your child gets the structure of school and the personal attention of homeschooling, and you do not have to do the teaching. The BrainWorks Homeschool Campus is at Bukit Utama Golf Resort, Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya.

Do I need to teach my child myself?

No. Our coaches do all the teaching. You stay in charge of the plan, and we keep you updated every week.

How many children are in each group?

Four to six. Each group has its own coach, supported by a senior coach, so every child gets personal attention.

What are the hours?

Sport and fitness from 8:30am, breakfast at 9:30am, then four hours of learning in four blocks with lunch in between. Revision and assessment run from 2:30pm to 3pm, and children go home at 3pm. Extended sessions or tuition are available from 3pm to 7pm.

Which curriculum do you use?

The Cambridge curriculum, from Year 1 to Year 11 (IGCSE), together with our cognitive, character and skillset modules.

Can my child take Cambridge IGCSE exams?

Yes. Our coaches teach the Cambridge curriculum and prepare students to sit Cambridge examinations, including IGCSE.

Will my child still make friends?

Yes. Children learn in groups, play sport together every weekday and talk with adults daily. A 2013 review of three decades of research found homeschooled children gain the social skills they need.

Can my child start in the middle of the year?

Yes. There is no intake season, so your child can start any month, as long as a place is available.

Do you support children with learning difficulties?

Yes, case by case, for mild learning differences. No diagnosis is needed to join. We do not diagnose; we are happy to work alongside your child’s doctor or psychologist.

How will I know my child is progressing?

Your child is assessed every week, and you get a weekly report, a monthly progress call and a WhatsApp group with our team.

How much does the Homeschool Campus cost?

Our current fees are on our fees page at brainworks.my/fees. WhatsApp us on +6010 391 6892 and we will suggest the right programme for your child.
